Flora Farms Organic Gardens in San Jose del Cabo (Los Cabos), Mexico

Living in San Diego with Mexico as our next door neighbor, Cabo San Lucas is one of our favorite places to frequent. When visiting, we’ve heard on numerous occasions about an organic farm just outside of San Jose del Cabo called Flora Farms. Friends have raved about it and we’ve been excited to see what the fuss was all about. We finally made it out there on our latest trip, and boy, it exceeded our high expectations. The Farm was started over 20 years ago when Gloria and Patrick Greene purchased the land and moved their family from Northern California out to the boonies of Los Cabos to plant and grow basil. What they’ve created over the years has turned into a local treasure. Today the Farm employs 350 locals and artisans. They make everything on the farm from scratch, right down to the lamp fixtures, glass windows, furniture & even the refrigerators.

We drove through the dusty hills just inland from the coast to get there. Once we arrived we felt like we stumbled into an oasis. All of a sudden there was lush green everywhere and even the air felt more pristine. Your heart just seems to lift as you step onto the grounds. The old-fashioned homemade ice cream stand taunts you when you arrive, as do the quaint little shops filled with specialty gifts and locally made goods. We opted to start our morning with sombreros and some freshly squeezed juice.

We took our mason jars filled with watermelon and orange juice out into the fields to explore the ten acres of land. We got a tour of the farm and orchards, and even strolled through the Culinary Cottages and the hillside Haylofts communities (beautiful homes actually built out of hay!) that have been built by Flora’s own artisans. These are unique real estate opportunities where owners have harvesting privileges and are encouraged to partake in the farming of the land. Bordering the herb garden nearby is the Farm Spa, where guests can partake in services like massage, facials or mani/pedis. They can also visit the hair salon or take a yoga or pilates class in the fitness studio. The focus of the spa is nature-immersed restorative healing. Plant-based products and organic flowers and herbs from the garden are used in their products. You can even take workshops in therapeutic modalities like meditation, breathwork, nutrition, and aromatherapy.

The grounds are glorious! We could run and play there all day. The mango grove is beautiful and is used for private dinners and socials. There is an herb garden amphitheater, swimmable family pond, multiple stages, and plenty of romantic event areas. Supposedly, super-rockstar Adam Levine got married here on the property.

The gardens and orchards were abundant with fruit and vegetables. They grow over 95 varieties of fruits and vegetables throughout the season, mostly from organic, Heirloom seeds. They are full of unmodified flavor! We explored the pond where turtles have mysteriously shown up year after year to dig nests and lay eggs. Fish and turtle food is available at the front desk and kids love bouncing back and forth between feeding them and playing on the Greene family’s swingset in their children’s play area.

When we returned to the little village area we watched the bakers baking bread and wondered about the “grocery store” they have created with all their handpicked goodies from the farm.

The sell everything from produce, herbs, flowers, breads, and sweet baked goods, to sauces, honey, pickles and preserves. They even have local meat and eggs. They make most everything themselves, even fresh cheeses and smoked chicken!

Not only does Flora Farms host painting lessons, but they also have cooking classes! So of course, we had to join them for an episode of Tia & Talia’s Tasty Treats healthy kids’ cooking show!

We made homemade tortillas with edible flower petals and roasted tomato salsa. They were delicious!

The Greenes are currently building a cooking school on the site of their old beloved family home, a yurt that was sadly destroyed in Hurricane Odile in 2014.

After wetting our whistle our appetites were peaked. We wandered over to the restaurant, Flora’s Field Kitchen, where we had a delicious, organic, freshly handmade lunch. We sat right next to the rows of basil, rosemary, kale, and arugula, that eventually found its way to our plates. A true farm to table experience.

They started us off with a variety of the freshly made bread from the bakery. Knowing that two of us are gluten-free they brought us some homemade gluten-free flatbread and hummus with garlic, rosemary, and prosciutto. Is your mouth watering yet?

They indulged us adults with fresh juice drinks from the Farm Bar. I highly recommend the hibiscus martini, and the El Viejo (a smokey mezcal) had quite a kick!

I had the Farm Harvest Salad, loaded with beets, carrots, butternut squash and cold roasted chicken. It tasted like they just picked the kale fresh from the garden….and they probably did!

The hubby had the special of the day, fresh linguini pasta with cactus.

Talia loves noodles but doesn’t get them that often because of her sensitivities. Lucky for her, they make their own and made her a gluten-free linguini, which she devoured. Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying one of their homemade baked goods. We opted for the carrot cake and not a crumb was left on the plate.

We enjoyed live music during our lunch and were delighted to learn that they host live music every night on the Hale Bale Stage. Their family movie night series under the pergola is another fun community activity that they offer during the summer months. We noticed that The Farm is also a safe haven for stray dogs. At any time there may be 10+ fostered or adopted dogs walking on the grounds. The pack has formed a family and no one is turned away. We made friends with many of them as they slept at our feet while we ate. We were especially fond of Muñeca, a big, friendly black lab.

If you find yourself in Los Cabos we definitely recommend that you check out Flora Farms! Reservations for the restaurant are advised and can be made here. Esperamos que lo disfrutes!
